Pretzel Logic

They’ve got us all tied up in knots.
The teachers union wants to suspend statewide assessments because they know the news is bad. They want a pay raise, but they won’t reopen the schools. Districts that have gone to a 4-day school week now want more money to add back a 5th day. What’s a legislator to do?

HB21-1161: Suspend Statewide Assessments for Select Grades
This bill suspends state assessments for the following instructional areas and grade levels for the 2020-21 school year:
– science for students in grades 5, 8 and 11
– math for students in grades 3, 5 and 7
– English language arts for grades 4, 6 & 8
We OPPOSE this bill.

SB21-172: Educator Pay Raise Fund
This bill creates the educator pay raise fund, which consists of money the general assembly may appropriate or transfer to the fund. The Department of Education must distribute this money to school districts to increase teacher salaries and the hourly wage paid to other employees.  We OPPOSE this bill.

HB21-1006: Fifth Day School Enrichment Programs Funding
This bill creates the fifth-day academic enrichment and support grant program to award grants to one or more eligible community-based nonprofit organizations to provide supplemental educational programs to full-day kindergarten through high school-aged children on the fifth day of the week for children in schools that have a 4-day school week. We OPPOSE this bill.
